Erste Bank Hungary is a Hungary-based subsidiary of Austria's Erste Bank. Erste Group entered the Hungarian market by purchasing the state-owned Mezőbank in 1997. In 2003, acquistion of Postabank cemented Erste Bank's position among the top five banks on the market. Now, Erste Bank serves some 900,000 clients through 201 branches in Hungary. Erste Bank is the second largest commercial bank in Austria. In 1997, Erste Group went public with a strategy to expand its retail business into Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Since then Erste Group's customer base has grown through numerous acquisitions and organic growth from 600,000 to around 16.4 million. With 2,900 branches and 46,000 employees, Erste Group is today one of the largest financial services providers in the Eastern part of EU in terms of clients and total assets.
