Based on a comparison of 18 countries in 2016, France ranked the highest in gross human consumption of varietal wine with 3,797 1,000 hl followed by Spain and Romania. On the other end of the scale was Malta with 13.8 1,000 hl, Portugal with 19.0 1,000 hl and Lithuania with 21.6 1,000 hl.
