Based on a comparison of 25 countries in 2014, China ranked the highest in raw silk production with 126,000 tonnes followed by India and Vietnam. On the other end of the scale was Taiwan with 1.00 tonnes, South Korea with 3.00 tonnes and Bulgaria with 5.00 tonnes.

Total raw silk production reached 167,006 tonnes in 2014 in the World according to Faostat. This is 0.543 % less than in the previous year and 12.6 % more than 10 years ago.

Historically, total raw silk production reached an all time high of 168,511 tonnes in 2012 and an all time low of 32,503 tonnes in 1961. The average annual growth amounted to 3.14 % since 1961.
