Based on a comparison of 19 banks in Russia, Sberbank produced the highest net profit in 2016, followed by VTB Bank and Alfa Bank.

Sberbank made a net profit of RUB 540,620 mil, up 139% compared to the previous year. Historically, the bank’s net profit reached an all time high of RUB 540,620 mil in 2016 and an all time low of RUB 13,553 mil in 1997. The average profit in the last five years amounted to RUB 355,952 mil.

The bank generated an average return on equity of 18.3% for its shareholders in the last five years with a maximum of 24.0% and a minimum of 10.3%.

Comparing Sberbank with its closest peers, VTB Bank generated a net profit of RUB 44,440 mil with a ROE of 3.10% in 2016, Alfa Bank netted RUB 35,588 mil (ROE of 10.7%) and Sovcombank announced a net profit of RUB 33,558 mil giving a ROE of 73.6%.

The net profit of the Russia’s banking sector amounted to RUB 655,901 mil in 2016, up 671% compared to the previous year. Heading up the rankings, Sberbank accounted for 82.4% of the sector’s net profit in 2016. The top 3 companies held a 94.6% share while the five largest firms some 104% in 2016.
