Based on a comparison of 19 banks in Russia in 2017, VTB Bank was the most cost efficient bank, followed by Credit Bank of Moscow and Sberbank.

VTB Bank's cost to income ratio reached 10.9% in 2017, down from 20.8% when compared to the last year. Historically, the bank’s costs reached an all time high of 61.1% in 2004 and an all time low of -0.127% in 2009.

When compared to total assets, bank's cost amounted to 1.39% in 2017, down from 0.924% a year earlier.

Comparing VTB Bank with its closest peers, Credit Bank of Moscow operated in 2017 with a cost to income ratio of 26.8%, Sberbank reached 34.3% and UniCredit Bank Russia some 34.4%.

The average cost to income ratio reached 79.9% in the Russian banking sector in 2017.
