Based on a comparison of 17 banks in Russia in 2016, Sberbank was the largest mortgage lender, followed by VTB Bank and Gazprombank.
Sberbank's mortgage loans reached RUB 2,750,900 mil, up from RUB 2,554,600 mil compared to the previous year. Historically, the bank’s mortgage loans reached an all time high of RUB 2,750,900 mil in 2016 and an all time low of RUB 512,787 mil in 2009.
At the end of 2016, mortgage loans represented 15.9% of Sberbank's loan book.
Comparing Sberbank with its closest peers, VTB Bank's mortgage loans amounted to RUB 997,700 mil at the end of 2016, Gazprombank operated with RUB 234,671 mil mortgage loans and Rosbank had a mortgage loan book of RUB 181,641 mil at the end of 2016.
Russian banking sector provided mortgage loans of RUB 4,493 mil in 2016, up 12.8% when compared to the previous year. As a result, the top ranked company - Sberbank accounted for 61.2% of the sector’s mortgage loans in 2016. The top 3 companies hold a 88.7% share while the five largest firms some 96.0% in 2016.
