Based on a comparison of 11 banks in Bulgaria in 2016, Piraeus Bank Bulgaria had the highest share of bad loans, followed by United Bulgarian Bank and First Investment Bank.

Piraeus Bank Bulgaria's non-performing loans reached 32.8% of total loans at the end of 2016, down from 33.3% when compared to the previous year. Historically, the NPL ratio hit an all time high of 35.3% in 2014 and an all time low of 1.02% in 2007.

Provision coverage amounted to 27.7% at the end of 2016, down from % compared to a year earlier.

Comparing Piraeus Bank Bulgaria with its closest peers, United Bulgarian Bank operated at the end of 2016 with NPL ratio of 27.7% and provision coverage of 54.4%, First Investment Bank with 19.3% and 73.6% and DSK Bank had 13.7% of bad loans covered with 90.0% by provisions at the end of 2016.

Non-performing loans of the whole Bulgaria’s banking sector amounted to 13.2% of total loans in 2016, down from 14.6% when compared to the last year.
