Germany and France have the largest Muslim populations among European Union member countries each with more than 4.7 million. While the UK comes third with just under three million.

This represents some 5-8% of the countries' total population.

However, according to Ipsos Mori analysis, the perception of Muslim populations among Europeans differs a great deal. The average French citizen thought 31% of France's population was Muslim against the recorded 8%. Germans thought theirs was 19% against 6%, and in the UK the figures were 21% and 5%.

The Muslim share of Europe’s total population has been increasing steadily. The top countries of origin of Muslims in Western Europe are Pakistan, Turkey and the Maghreb countries (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia).

The Muslim population grew about 1 percentage point a decade, from 4% in 1990 to 6% in 2010. The Pew research suggests this pattern is expected to continue through 2030, when Muslims are projected to make up 8% of Europe’s population.
