Public debt as a share of GDP fell 0.440% to 97.3% in Sri Lanka in 2024, according to the National Statistical Office.
Historically, public debt as a share of GDP in Sri Lanka reached an all time high of 131% in 2022 and an all time low of 67.5% in 2012. When compared to Sri Lanka's main peers, public debt as a share of GDP in India amounted to 84.1%, 70.0% in Malaysia, 125% in Maldives and 67.3% in Myanmar in 2024.
Sri Lanka has been ranked 19th within the group of 166 countries we follow in terms of public debt as a share of GDP, 13 places above the position seen 10 years ago.
