Merchandise trade as a share of GDP rose 40.6% to 140% in Brunei in 2021, according to the National Statistical Office.

Historically, merchandise trade as a share of GDP in Brunei reached an all time high of 259% in 1971 and an all time low of 66.3% in 2016. When compared to Brunei's main peers, merchandise trade as a share of GDP in Indonesia amounted to 35.9%, 144% in Malaysia, 50.5% in Philippines and 182% in Vietnam in 2021.
