Czech banks belong to the most profitable ones in the world. In 2000-2012, their ROE reached nearly 14% on average. High market concentration is one of the reasons for the superior profitability. The three largest banks (CSOB, Ceska Sporitelna and Komercni Banka) have been dominating the market, especially in the area of retail banking where they hold 60-70% market share in the key products.
Although the competition has been rising up, especially, from smaller banks such as mBank, AirBank, or Raiffeisen's Zuno, the Big3 remain in a comfortable position. In the area of mortgage lending, their market share has been even rising in the last years.
