Bank Negara's non-performing loans reached 9.12% of total loans at the end of 2019, up from 7.48% compared to the previous year. Historically, the NPL ratio hit an all time high of 64.9% in 1999 and an all time low of 2.09% in 2004.
Provision coverage amounted to 32.2% at the end of 2019, down from 37.0% compared to a year earlier.
The bank created loan loss provisions worth of 1.20% of average loans in 2019. That's compared to 1.58% of loans the bank put aside to its cost on average in the last five years.
